This LookHereMars production describes the history and production techniques of ancient Greek pottery and its origins in the Athenian neighbohood of Karameikos. Kerameikos was an ancient Athenian neighborhood located northwest of the Acropolis, known for its production of pottery and ceramics. The name Kerameikos comes from the Greek word "keramos," which means pottery. This area was home to numerous workshops and kilns, where skilled artisans created a variety of ceramic vessels, including amphorae, kraters, and kylikes, which were used for everyday purposes such as food storage, drinking, and mixing wine. The Kerameikos was also home to the potters' guild, which played an important role in regulating the production and trade of pottery.
Greek pottery originated in the Bronze Age around 3000 BCE and was influenced by the Minoan civilization and the Cycladic culture. During the Geometric period (900-700 BCE), pottery became a major industry in Athens and other Greek cities, and potters began to experiment with new shapes and decoration techniques, such as black-figure and red-figure painting. Pottery depicted scenes from mythology and everyday life and was an important means of artistic expression. It also became an important export item, traded throughout the Mediterranean world.
